Lives (the heart icon) are needed to start a level. You can hold up to five, and each one refills in 30 minutes. If you don't beat a level, you'll lose a life.

You can get more Lives by:

• Asking Facebook friends to send them.
• Earning them from event rewards.
• Buying them with Coins.
